Knoxville pours a mean glass, but finding the right one usually means guessing between a corner joint with dusty bottles and a spot that acts like wine is a personality test. That’s why I spent a month hitting every register in town, from the barrel-proof bourbon stacks at Broadway to the blackberry muscadine that made me nearly skip dinner at Goodwater.

Here’s the thing: I’m picky, I’m cheap, and I’ve been burned by snobbery. These twelve places earned their pour.

Trust the list, or keep gambling on that gas station cabernet.

Curated inventory for dinner pairings
Friendly, responsive service
Worth the stop anytime

I walked into Corks Wine & Spirits expecting to grab a bottle and bolt. Instead, I got stuck for twenty minutes talking shop with folks who actually know what they're doing. The gift section is dangerously thoughtful, like they've been spying on my friends' birthdays. I asked for a dinner pairing and they handed me something that made my pasta taste like a five-star effort. The staff is friendly, responsive, and zero pretension. It's not the flashiest spot in Knoxville, but it's the one I keep circling back to. Worth the stop anytime, honestly. Just don't expect to leave quickly.

Hard-to-find bottles, no markup

Liquor Vault is where I go when I want to feel like a bourbon genius without doing any work. The picks are killer and the prices are almost suspiciously fair. I mean, rare bottles with no markup? That's basically a miracle in this town. The staff actually knows their stuff, and the back room barrel-selection classes are a riot. I joined their tasting club and now I get emails that make me cancel plans. Hard-to-find bottles sit on shelves like they're ordinary. It's not fancy. It's better. It's the vault.

Knowledgeable staff, great bourbon picks
Killer tasting bar in back
Impressive wall of bourbon
Fair prices, easy return visit

McScrooge's sounds like a cartoon villain's lair, but it's actually a wine and spirits haven. The staff knows their bourbon picks, and the wall of bourbon is genuinely impressive. I stood there for a solid five minutes just staring. The tasting bar in the back is the real draw, though. You can sample stuff you'd never gamble on otherwise. Prices are fair, which is rare for a place with this much inventory. I left with a bottle I didn't plan on buying and zero regrets. Easy return visit. Honestly, it's become a habit.

Highlights
Killer prices on new finds
Friendly staff, zero fuss
Always something interesting to try
Walkable corner spot with deals

Middlebrook Liquor Store is the corner spot that doesn't try to impress you, and that's exactly why I love it. The prices are killer on new finds, and the staff is friendly with zero fuss. No lectures, no snobbery, just a quick nod and a recommendation that always lands. I've discovered more interesting bottles here than at places triple the size. It's walkable, it's cheap, and it's got that no-nonsense charm. I stopped in for one thing and left with three. That's on me, but also on them. Solid little joint.

Highlights
Quick owner response to issue
Exchanged wine without hassle
Stock includes West Coast goodies
Staff showed real concern

I had a minor issue at Hall of Fame Wine & Spirits, and I'm still shocked by how they handled it. The owner responded quicker than my own mother texts back, and swapped my wine without a single hassle. No interrogation, no side-eye, just a fix. The stock has some West Coast goodies I don't see anywhere else in Knoxville, which is a nice bonus. The staff showed real concern, which is rare in this industry. I didn't expect much walking in, but they won me over. I'll be back, and I'll actually pay attention to what I'm buying this time. Maybe.

Huge spirit selection statewide
Rare finds you won't see elsewhere
Manager Nick knows his stuff
Fantastic prices on everything
Unfriendly staff, but worth it

MC's Wine & Liquor has the biggest spirit selection in the state, and I'm not exaggerating. Rare finds just sit there, waiting for someone with taste. Manager Nick knows his stuff, and the prices on everything are fantastic. Here's the catch: the staff is unfriendly. Like, aggressively indifferent. One guy looked at me like I was interrupting his nap. But I keep going back because the bottles are worth it. I'll take a rude hello over a missing bourbon any day. It's a weird trade-off, but it works. Just bring your patience.

Highlights
Boutique wine and rare spirits
Serious walk-in cigar humidor
Expert advice from Roy
Delta 9 drinks in stock
Premium picks worth the price

Lakeshore Wine & Spirits feels like a boutique, but without the attitude. They've got serious rare spirits and a walk-in cigar humidor that makes me feel like a mob boss every time I step inside. Roy's advice is gold, and I've never walked out with a bad pick. They also stock Delta 9 drinks, which is a fun surprise. Premium picks come with premium prices, but you're paying for quality, not hype. I spent more than I planned, but I didn't regret a single dollar. This is the place to go when you want to treat yourself without leaving Knoxville.

Blackberry muscadine steals the show
Gene’s local knowledge is gold
Pizza outshines downtown Gatlinburg joints
Worth skipping the wine trail
Crust cooked to absolute perfection

Goodwater Pizza and Winery sounds like a weird combo, but trust me, it works. The blackberry muscadine wine steals the whole show. Gene's local knowledge is gold, and he'll tell you stories that make the wine taste better. The pizza outshines anything I had in downtown Gatlinburg, and that crust is cooked to absolute perfection. I almost skipped the wine trail to just stay here. Almost. You should skip it too. I left with a bottle and a full stomach, and I'm still thinking about that crust. Don't sleep on this place.

Great wine selection
Friendly, welcoming staff
Smoked trout dip standout
Relaxed, open atmosphere
Casual wine bar vibe

Zero/Zero Wine Bar is the kind of place where you can actually relax. The wine selection is great, and the staff is friendly without hovering. I ordered the smoked trout dip on a whim, and it was the standout of the night. The vibe is open and casual, no pretension at all. I brought a friend who knows nothing about wine, and they felt right at home. That's the mark of a good spot. I stayed longer than I intended, which is exactly what a wine bar should do. No regrets, just refills.

Helpful staff finds your bottle
Bourbon fan's happy hunting ground
Hard-to-find Buffalo Trace stocked
Barrel proof specials on shelves

Broadway Wine & Liquor is a bourbon hunter's paradise. The staff actually helps you find what you're looking for, which is more than I can say for most places. They stock hard-to-find Buffalo Trace like it's no big deal, and the barrel proof specials are sitting right on the shelves. I snagged a bottle I'd been chasing for months. The place isn't fancy, but it doesn't need to be. It's just a solid, no-nonsense liquor store that delivers. I walked in for one thing and walked out with three. That's the sign of a good spot.

Funniest bartender in Knoxville
Wines absolutely delicious, all of them
Staff turns strangers into besties
You will leave with cases
Worth the drive, no question

Bootleggers Winery is worth the drive, and I don't say that lightly. The bartender is the funniest person in Knoxville, bar none. The wines are all delicious, and I mean all of them. I tried the whole list and couldn't pick a favorite. The staff has this magic ability to turn strangers into besties by the second glass. I left with cases, plural, and zero shame. It's a little out of the way, but that's part of the charm. If you want a winery experience that doesn't feel like a museum, go here. You'll thank me.

Friday: 9 AM–10:55 PM
Saturday: 9 AM–10:55 PM
Highlights
Friendly, helpful staff
Will order special requests
Poor customer service
Unprofessional staff behavior

Knox Liquor is a frustrating experience, because the staff can be genuinely helpful and will order special requests without complaint. But then you hit the other side of the coin: poor customer service and unprofessional behavior that makes you wonder if you walked into a different store. I've had one guy go out of his way to track down a bottle, and another act like I was wasting his time. It's a coin flip every visit. They have a decent selection, but the inconsistency kills it. I want to like this place. I really do. But they make it hard.
