I played them all in a single weekend, and I’m still sore. Highlands isn’t just a summer town; it’s a golf town, where the real divide isn’t old money versus new, but which grill menu wins between the back nine and the pool house.

The range runs from the no-frills, walk-up burger stand behind the pro shop at Wildcat Cliffs to the white-tablecloth tasting menu at Old Edwards, where they’ll plate a trout so fresh it practically flops. Locals will tell you the secret is booking a twilight tee time, then finishing with a pimento cheese sandwich at the halfway hut.

So, here are the five clubs that actually earned their initiation fees.

Highlights
Beautiful scenery and grounds
Surprisingly excellent dining options
Wide variety of daily activities
Friendly, welcoming member community

I spent a full day at Highlands Falls and left impressed. The grounds are immaculate, and the mountain views do most of the aesthetic work for you. What surprised me was the dining. I expected standard club fare, but the lunch menu had real thought behind it. The members were friendly in a way that felt practiced but genuine. There is a daily activity calendar that borders on excessive. I counted three options before noon. It is a club that keeps you busy or lets you sit still. I chose the latter. That worked fine.

Favorite golf course locally
Warm and welcoming members
Rustic mountain elegance
Excellent staff experiences

Wildcat Cliffs was my favorite golf course in the area. That is not a casual statement. The layout plays with the terrain in ways that feel natural, not forced. The members waved me through on the back nine, which I appreciated. The clubhouse has a rustic mountain elegance that does not try too hard. The staff remembered my name by the second hole. I am not sure how they managed that. The whole experience felt warm without being cloying. If I lived here, I would not look elsewhere.

Old Edwards Club

Old Edwards Club
Highlights
Golf course in excellent condition
Friendly and attentive staff
High-quality food and service
Scenic back nine with great views

Old Edwards Club sets a high bar for course conditioning. The fairways were like carpet. I am still thinking about the back nine, where the views open up over the valley. The staff were attentive without hovering. My lunch was well prepared and served quickly. I noticed the service pace matched the golf pace, which is rare. Nothing felt rushed, but nothing lagged either. It is a polished operation. I left wondering if the membership is as good as the staff. I suspect it is.

Exceptional wedding and golf experience
Stunning, meticulously maintained course
Breathtaking views throughout
Outstanding event coordination by Megan
Memorable group golf arrangements

I came to Trillium for a wedding and stayed for the golf. The course is stunning and meticulously maintained. The views are the kind that make you stop mid-swing. Megan handled the event coordination, and she was exceptional. She anticipated problems before I saw them. The group golf arrangements were memorable, with no lost tee times or confusion. That is not common. The whole place operates with a quiet efficiency. I have been to fancier clubs, but few have felt this well run. I would return for either reason.

Great croquet and golf
Beautiful autumn leaf scenery

Delicious lunch and porches

The Country Club of Sapphire Valley surprised me with its croquet setup. I played a round and then hit the course. The golf views are breathtaking, especially in autumn. The leaves were turning, and the color was almost distracting. Course conditions were pristine, which made the round enjoyable. Lunch on the porch was delicious. I sat there longer than I should have. The whole place feels understated and comfortable. It is not flashy. It does not need to be. The landscape does the talking.

Highlights
World-class mountain golf
Grand Slam history
Family-friendly atmosphere

Highlands Country Club has a serious golf pedigree. The course is world-class, and the Grand Slam history is on the walls. I felt the weight of that when I stood on the first tee. The atmosphere is family-friendly, which is not always the case at historic clubs. I saw kids playing on the lawn and parents not worrying. The mountain setting does the rest. It is a classic club that has aged well. I did not want to leave. The round was that good.

Cullasaja Club

Highlights
Staff sets the gold standard
First-class facilities throughout
Warm, friendly membership culture
Stunning natural setting

Cullasaja Club impressed me from the first handshake. The staff set the gold standard. They were everywhere and nowhere at once, which is the trick. Facilities are first-class throughout. The locker room alone was nicer than my apartment. The membership culture is warm and friendly. I chatted with a member on the patio, and she invited me to play next week. That does not happen everywhere. The natural setting is stunning. It is quiet, green, and unhurried. I felt at home quickly.

Scenic river and lake views
Locally sourced fresh ingredients
Upscale yet cozy ambiance
Attentive, welcoming service
Premium spa and tennis amenities

The Hudson House sits right on the water. The river and lake views are scenic in a calm way, not dramatic. The food focuses on locally sourced ingredients, and I tasted the difference in a simple salad. The space is upscale yet cozy, with fireplaces and soft chairs. The service was attentive and welcoming. I noticed the spa and tennis amenities are premium. I only used the locker room, but it was spotless. This is a place for a long lunch or a lazy afternoon. I took both.

Best blueberry muffins anywhere
Fantastic scenery and bonfires
Welcoming high-class atmosphere
Memorable guest experience

Mountaintop Golf & Lake Club made a strong impression. The staff are exceptional, from the valet to the starter. I had the best blueberry muffin of my life there. I am not exaggerating. The scenery is fantastic, with views that stretch past the fairways. They had a bonfire going by late afternoon, and it smelled like pine and smoke. The atmosphere is high-class but welcoming. I felt underdressed and overdressed at the same time. The guest experience was memorable. I will be back for the muffin alone.
