Breakfast in Sevierville is a strange, wonderful mess, and that is the point. Local spots like Donut Friar still run cash-only for a fluffy cruller while The Appalachian prints its farm sources on the menu, a gap you won't find anywhere else.

You can eat a fried deviled egg at Chubby's or a turkey burrito salad from a family-run meal-prep spot, and both will feel right. Expect the best reuben in Tennessee and a few mimosas with your omelet.

The rankings are honest, even when they hurt.

Best reuben in Tennessee
Massive, generous sandwich portions
Fresh, high-quality ingredients
Fast, friendly service
Locally sourced kombucha available

Tennessee Jed's does not mess around with sandwiches. The reuben claims the best in Tennessee, and I am not inclined to argue. The portions are massive, the kind that require a strategy and possibly a second napkin. Ingredients taste fresh, and the service is fast without being rushed. They even have locally sourced kombucha, which feels like a reward for finishing the first half. It is a straightforward place that knows what it does. It does it well. If you leave hungry, that is entirely your own fault.

Tenderloin sandwich best
Clean, country, quiet spot
Worth the discovery

Chubby's is the sort of place you stumble upon and then feel guilty for not having found sooner. The fried deviled eggs are exceptional, a crispy exterior giving way to a creamy, tangy center. The tenderloin sandwich is the best I have had in the area, and I say that with some reluctance. The room is clean, country, and quiet, which is a rare combination. The staff is friendly, fast, and warm. Worth the discovery, yes. Worth telling others about? I am still deciding.

Spotless, spacious, military decor
Friendly staff, helpful ordering
Jeep tailgate coffee bar

Black Rifle Coffee Company serves the best coffee in the Smokies. I know this because I have drunk a lot of mediocre coffee in the Smokies. The space is spotless and spacious, with military decor that feels deliberate, not gimmicky. The staff is friendly and helpful, even when you are staring at the menu like it is written in code. The Jeep tailgate coffee bar is a nice touch. Veterans and first responders get discounts. The coffee is strong. The room is quiet. That is enough.

Crunchy texture, rich sweetness
Friendly staff, clear expertise
Dairy-free options tempt thieves

Waffle de Lys knows that a free sample is the fastest way to my heart. The sweet waffles are worth sharing, which I say only because ordering one for yourself feels excessive. The texture is crunchy on the outside, rich and soft inside. The staff clearly knows their craft. They even offer dairy-free options, which tempt thieves like me to consider a second visit under false pretenses. The samples seal the deal. I left with a box and a sense of accomplishment.

The second Waffle de Lys location, off Airport Road, does not disappoint. The waffles are fresh, light, and beautifully presented, almost too pretty to eat. Almost. The vegetarian-friendly sweet options abound, which is a relief for those of us who prefer dessert for breakfast. The cozy seating encourages slow mornings, the kind where you forget what time it is. Convenient parking, too. Sample the toppings before you commit; the staff will not judge. They might even encourage it.

Highlights
Quick seating, fresh salad bar
Hot, tasty all-you-can-eat options
Affordable bar versus other spots
Kind waitress, fast service
Desserts and fruit worth trying

Shoney's is not a place I expected to enjoy, but there it is. Seating was quick, and the salad bar was fresh, which is less common than you might think. The all-you-can-eat options are hot and tasty, and the price undercuts most other spots in town. The waitress was kind, and the service was fast. The desserts and fruit are worth trying, though I recommend saving room. It is not fancy. It does not pretend to be. That is precisely the appeal.

Charming old-school atmosphere
Cash-only, free ATM drink
Upstairs seating, outdoor option

The Donut Friar is a study in old-school charm. The donuts are fluffy, and the prices are fair, which is a combination I have learned to treasure. The chocolate cruller is unique, and the flavors rotate in ways that keep you curious. The atmosphere is charming, with upstairs seating and an outdoor option for those who prefer their sugar with fresh air. Cash only, but they offer a free ATM drink to soften the blow. It is a small price to pay for a good cruller.

Wood-fired scent throughout dining room
Open kitchen view from tables
Farm sources printed on menu
Effortless, relaxed fine dining
Worth every dollar spent

The Appalachian is an exercise in restraint. The wood-fired scent hits you as you walk in, and the open kitchen gives you a view of the action without the noise. The menu lists farm sources, which feels less like a gimmick and more like a promise. The dining is effortless; relaxed fine dining, if that is not a contradiction. Every dish felt worth the price, and the service was attentive without hovering. It is the kind of place you save for a special occasion. Or a Tuesday.

Coffee refills itself magically
Huge fluffy veggie omelet
Tacos worth the hype
Reasonable prices, plus mimosas
Worth the Saturday wait

Sun Diner has a line on Saturday, and I now understand why. The coffee refills itself, or so it seemed; I never once had to ask. The veggie omelet is huge and fluffy, the kind that spills over the plate. The tacos, I am told, are worth the hype, and they are. Prices are reasonable, and there are mimosas, which makes the wait more tolerable. The staff moves fast. The food comes faster. It is a diner that knows its business.

Highlights
Friendly service, average fare

Frank Allen's Market & Grill is a friendly place. The service is genuinely warm, and the staff seems happy to see you. The food, however, is average. Not bad, not memorable, just in between. The kind of meal you forget by the time you get back to the car. I would not steer anyone away, but I would not make a special trip either. It is a decent stop if you are in the area and hungry. That is about all I can say without stretching the truth.

Charming alleyway setting
Creative flavored drinks
Exceptional, friendly service
Easy to walk past

Coffee & Company is easy to walk past. It sits in an alleyway, which is exactly the kind of thing I usually miss. The drinks are creative, and the coffee is good. The service is exceptional, friendly in a way that feels practiced but sincere. The setting is charming, almost secret. I almost walked past it twice. I am glad I did not. If you are looking for something out of the way, this is it. Just remember to look down the alley.

Healthy Balance Meals is a surprise. The turkey burrito salad is the best I have had, and I have had many. The chili is big and tasty, the kind that fills you up without weighing you down. The family owners are welcoming, and the frozen dinners taste fresh, which is a small miracle. It is a healthy spot worth repeating, and I plan to. I only wish I had found it sooner. The food is good. The people are better.
