The barbecue lineup in Pigeon Forge runs deeper than the tourist strips suggest. Drive past the pancake houses and you will find Delauder's, where the owner chats with you like a neighbor, serving the juiciest meat I have had in years.

At the other pole, there is a smoked potato at Bustin' Butts inside a produce stand that redefines what a side dish can be. I have eaten a lot of ribs this month.

The beef ribs there are the ones I would cross the county line for again. This list sorts through the smoke and the sauce so you do not have to guess.

Fresh produce bonus

Bustin' Butts BBQ sits inside a produce stand, which felt odd at first. Then I had the beef ribs. Best I've ever eaten. The brisket was worth dying for, and I mean that in a good way. The smoked potato was a standout too. It came loaded and smoky. The family running the place was friendly. The fresh produce out front is a nice bonus. This place is unpretentious. It just does barbecue right. I would drive out of my way for those ribs again. I might even buy some vegetables while I'm there.

I tried Bennett's Pit Bar-B-Que a second time, earlier in the day. That made a difference. The barbecue sauce flavors were excellent. Each one had its own personality. The service was friendly and accommodating. They helped me decide between a few items. The burgers and sides were great. The fresh garlic biscuits were the standout. Warm, buttery, and gone too fast. I would say go early. It felt less chaotic. The food still delivered. This place has consistency on its side. Not a bad problem to have.

TENNESSEE JED'S Craft Sandwiches is not a traditional barbecue joint. It does not need to be. The reuben here is the best in Tennessee. I will stand by that. The portions are massive, and the price is fair. I could not finish mine. The ingredients tasted fresh. They even had new flavor combinations I had not tried before. The service was fast and friendly. They also sell locally sourced kombucha. I skipped it. The sandwich was enough. This place knows what it is doing. I would go back for that reuben.
