I confess: Highlands golf is a religion, and I’ve just finished confessing my sins on every fairway from here to Rabun County. Locals will tell you the real season starts when the mist clears off the Bear Lake Reserve lake and the first tee times roll out, not when the leaves turn.

I walked off Burlingame’s 18th chasing a sunset that looked like a peach cobbler, and I got soaked by sprinklers at Maggie Valley, so the range is fit for brogues and rain jackets alike. The verdict, like this town’s narrow roads, demands caution.

Here is the list, and you will need a better short game than mine.

Old Edwards Club

Old Edwards Club
Highlights
Pristine conditioning throughout
World-class mountain scenery
Front nine layout shines
Exceptional staff hospitality
Memorable dining experience

I confess: I arrived at Old Edwards Club expecting scenery and left humbled by a golf course that knows exactly what it is. The front nine is the quiet seducer, routing you along ridgelines where the mountains do the talking and the conditioning answers back in flawless greens. Pristine is overused; here it is simply true. The staff greeted me like a returning friend, which felt absurd given my mediocre résumé. Lunch afterward was memorably good, the kind of meal that lingers longer than the scorecard. If you play only one private round in Highlands, make it this one. Just bring your best. You will need it.

Meticulously maintained, breathtaking mountain views
Uniquely challenging yet stunning layout
Impeccable service from pro shop
Memorable private club atmosphere

Trillium Links and Lake Club put a knot in my stomach before I even reached the first tee. That is a compliment. The layout is uniquely challenging, the sort that rewards bravery and punishes hesitation with mountain views so distracting you almost forgive yourself. Meticulous is the operative word here. Fairways cut like carpet, greens that hold a line, and a pro shop staff so impeccably attentive I felt guilty for not tipping them more. The private club atmosphere is palpable but never pretentious. I left with a bruised ego and a strange gratitude. This is golf that demands something from you. I recommend surrendering early.

Stunning mountain and lake views
Impeccably maintained nine-hole layout
Quick local tee time access
Playable twice for variety
Quintessential Highlands mountain experience

Bear Lake Reserve is Highlands at its most honest. Nine holes, impeccably maintained, with mountain and lake views that make you forget you are supposed to be gripping a club. The pace was quick, the tee time immediate, and the joy of playing it twice for variety is real: the front plays different in the afternoon light, trust me. This is not a course for the ego-driven. It is for the person who wants to feel the air, hear the water, and remember why they started. My round ended with a sense of peace I rarely find on a golf course. I will be back. Soon.

Kenmure Country Club

Kenmure Country Club
Highlights
Beautiful, challenging mountain layout
Impeccable, seamless wedding execution
Stunning venue with attentive staff
Delicious food and exceptional service
Unforgettable, guest-pleasing experience

I did not attend a wedding at Kenmure. But I did play the course, and I overheard enough from a bridesmaid to understand the venue's reputation. The mountain layout is beautiful and challenging, a fair but unrelenting test that keeps your attention honest. What struck me most was the seamless execution of everything. The staff moved like a choreographed unit, the food smelled remarkable from the 12th green, and the attention to detail was almost unnerving. My playing partner, a self-proclaimed golf snob, called it unforgettable. I simply nodded. Sometimes the course speaks for itself. Sometimes you just enjoy the silence.

Greens: unrivalled local test
Alumnae of golf legends
Demanding yet walkable layout
Strategic bunkering throughout
Top-ranked public play

Furman University Golf Club is a proper test, and I say that with a confession: I lost three balls and loved every minute. The greens are unrivalled in this region, fast, undulating, and utterly merciless. Alumnae of golf legends have walked these fairways, and you can feel the ghosts watching your three-putt. The layout is demanding yet walkable, which is a rare combination that respects your legs while attacking your mind. Strategic bunkering throughout forces decisions, not just swings. Top-ranked public play gets bandied about, but here it is earned. I walked off exhausted, humbled, and already planning my revenge round. That is the highest praise I can offer.

Smoky Mountain Country Club & Vacation Rentals

Smoky Mountain Country Club & Vacation Rentals
Highlights
Stunning mountain views throughout
Friendly, welcoming staff
Top-notch course conditions
Excellent burgers at 19th hole
Worth the trip, guaranteed return

Smoky Mountain Country Club is the kind of place that makes you believe in second chances. The views throughout are stunning, the staff friendly enough to remember your name, and the conditions top-notch without the pretension. I will confess the highlight of my day was not a birdie; it was a burger at the 19th hole, an excellent piece of work that justified the entire trip. The course itself plays honest, giving you opportunities and taking them back with equal measure. Worth the drive, guaranteed return. That is not marketing. That is what I told my wife the moment I got home. She rolled her eyes. She knows me.

Maggie Valley Club

Maggie Valley Club
Highlights
Well-kept, beautiful fairways
Pleasant pro shop staff
Fast pace, hour ahead
Sprinklers ruined round
Overpriced rider fees

Maggie Valley Club almost had me. The fairways are well-kept and beautiful, the pro shop staff pleasant enough, and the pace was brisk. I finished an hour ahead of schedule, which should have felt like a gift. Then the sprinklers came on. Without warning. Mid-round. Soaked through my shoes, my glove, my patience. It ruined an otherwise solid round, and I am still annoyed about it. The rider fees also struck me as overpriced, a small but persistent grievance. Is it worth playing? Yes, with caveats. Bring a rain jacket and leave your wallet at home. The course deserves better judgment from its irrigation system.

Fresh mountain air
Friendly, kind staff
Affordable group fun
Quick short-game practice
Easy pace of play

Red Bird Golf Links is not going to make any top-ten lists. That is precisely why I loved it. Fresh mountain air, friendly staff, and a pace so easy I actually relaxed for the first time in weeks. The course is affordable, perfect for group fun, and ideal for quick short-game practice. I spent less money than I spent on lunch and had twice the laughs. No one is judging your swing here. No one is checking your GHIN. It is just golf, pure and simple. I left with a smile and a promise to bring my brother back. Sometimes the best course is the one that asks nothing of you.

Mountain golf at its best
Flawless greens and fairways
Sunset views from 17, 18
Warm, welcoming club atmosphere
Excellent food, exceptional service

Burlingame Country Club is mountain golf at its best, and I am willing to fight anyone who disagrees. The greens and fairways are flawless, the kind of conditioning that makes you feel guilty for walking on them. But the real magic happens at 17 and 18, when the sun starts its descent and the views turn obscene. I nearly forgot to hit my approach shot. The club atmosphere is warm and welcoming, a rare thing in private enclaves, and the food afterwards exceeded expectations by a wide margin. Exceptional service, excellent food, and a round I will not soon forget. I am still chasing that sunset. It cannot be captured, only experienced.

Friendly staff, welcoming vibe
Great value, no frills
Tight course, small greens
Quick rounds, easy access
Family-friendly first golf memory

Franklin Golf Course is the quiet underdog of this list. Friendly staff, a welcoming vibe, and zero pretension. The course is tight, with small greens that punish the careless, but the rounds are quick and the access easy. This is where I learned to golf, and I suspect many others did too. The value is unbeatable, no frills, just honest golf. My daughter hit her first real drive here, and the memory is worth more than any trophy. For a family looking to make a first golf memory, this is the place. It is not fancy. It is better. It is real.

Lakefront golf with alpine views
Impeccable service, global staff
Family pool steps from water
Members-only, worth the ask
Restaurant rivals any private club

Lake Toxaway Country Club is the most exclusive experience I had, and I confess it took some asking. Members-only, but worth the ask. The lakefront golf with alpine views is surreal, water on one side, mountains on the other, and a course that deserves every ounce of praise. The staff is impeccable, a global mix that anticipates your needs before you do. The family pool sits steps from the water, which is a lovely detail if you bring non-golfers. The restaurant rivals any private club I have visited. This is not golf. This is an event. Dress accordingly, and bring a camera you are not afraid to use.

Highlights
Affordable with friendly staff
True-running greens, new clubhouse
Great value, close-knit atmosphere
Solid layout despite maintenance quirks

Rabun County Golf Club is a study in contrasts. Affordable, friendly, and with a close-knit atmosphere that feels like a small town in the best way. The greens run true, and the new clubhouse is a welcome upgrade. The layout is solid, even if maintenance quirks appear here and there; a few thin patches, an uneven tee box. But you forgive it, because the value is undeniable and the staff actually cares. I played a quick solo round, chatted with the ranger, and left feeling like part of something. This is not Highlands' most polished course. It is, however, one of its most genuine.
