Pies in Knoxville usually mean one of two poles: the dependable, gas-station-adjacent sugar bomb perfect for I-40, or a warm, flaky slice served by someone who actually remembers your name. We hit both.

The pecan pie off the interstate is dense enough to make you mad you didn’t buy two, while a buttermilk slice across town, recommended by a sharp-eyed server, cuts its sweetness with a proper tang. One shop donates to local causes; the other just makes you feel like a regular.

Go find your corner. The full breakdown is below.

Best I-40 pecan pie
Frozen chicken pot pies
Affordable four-pack minis
Generous community donations
Worth every pie-ish bite

I stopped at the Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop off I-40 expecting roadside filler. The pecan pie changed my mind. It's dense, dark, and properly sticky, the kind that leaves a sugar crust on your lips and a complaint on your tongue that you didn't buy two. The four-pack of minis is a smart, affordable gamble, and the frozen chicken pot pies are a weird, comforting detour. They also donate to local causes, which is more than most pie shops can say. Worth every pie-ish bite. Just don't ask for whipped cream unless you want a lecture on pie purity.

Fresh pies, made with care
Amelia’s service is standout
Friendly, helpful, memorable welcome
Worth a return trip
Top-notch pie recommendations

The second Buttermilk Sky location feels like a different operation entirely, in a good way. Fresh pies, made with visible care, line the case. Amelia handled my order, and her service was standout. She asked what I craved, then pointed me to a buttermilk pie I would have skipped. Friendly, helpful, memorable. That level of welcome is rare, especially when you're just another guy with a fork. The slice was warm, the crust flaky, and the filling had a tang that cut through the sugar. I'm already planning the return trip. Top-notch recommendations, no gimmicks.
